Oudeschild developed as Texel island’s primary harbor into a strategic stronghold of the Dutch Admiralty and a significant center of Wadden Sea navigation. The protected Texel roadstead served for centuries as a gathering point for Dutch fleets before major sea voyages, offering ideal conditions for repairs and provisioning of naval expeditions. Oudeschild became renowned for its experienced pilots who safely navigated merchant vessels and warships through the treacherous Wadden waters to the open North Sea.
The Texel sailing fleet transported wool, sheep, and other island products to the mainland while bringing essential supplies back to the island community. Particularly during the Golden Age, East Indiamen and whaling ships anchored here before their expeditions to distant waters. Oudeschild’s maritime heritage is preserved today in the Kaap Skil Museum, which celebrates the island’s rich seafaring history and honors Texel’s pivotal role in Dutch naval heritage.
