Marken

Marken evolved as an isolated island in the former Zuiderzee, developing a unique fishing community with centuries-old maritime traditions. The inhabitants of this secluded island lived exclusively from fishing, navigating traditional sailing vessels through the treacherous waters surrounding their homeland. Marken’s distinctive green wooden houses on stilts tell the story of a resilient community that defied the sea for generations.

Island residents developed specialized sailing techniques and sturdy fishing boats perfectly adapted to harsh maritime conditions. Their traditional costumes and distinctive culture reflected their profound connection to the sea and sailing life. Even after the construction of a causeway in 1957 connected Marken to the mainland, this remarkable island community proudly preserves its authentic maritime heritage, remaining a living testament to Dutch island culture and seafaring tradition.
