Markermeer

The Markermeer was created in 1976 through the division of the IJsselmeer, preserving as the Netherlands’ youngest inland sea the centuries-old seafaring traditions of the former Zuiderzee. These sheltered waters between the mainland and Marken island provide ideal conditions for traditional sailing vessels and modern yachts alike. The Markermeer serves as the heart of Dutch flat-bottomed sailing, where authentic botters, skutsjes, and other historic sailing types continue their maritime traditions.

The strategic location between Amsterdam and Frisian waters makes the Markermeer a crucial link for sailing routes throughout the Netherlands. Experienced sailors appreciate the protected conditions and proximity to historic ports including Volendam, Marken, and Hoorn. The Markermeer embodies the successful fusion of modern water management with traditional seafaring heritage, creating a unique sailing environment that honors Dutch maritime culture while serving contemporary recreational sailing needs.
